Valencia is a paradise for contemporary art lovers. If you are one of them, do not miss a visit to the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM). This relatively young museum was opened in 1989. Its collection already exceeds 11,000 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, videos and installations to demonstrate the main art movements of the twentieth century.
The building was specially designed for the museum but inherited the remains of the old medieval city wall dating from the mid-fourteenth century. There is a permanent exhibition featuring the works of Julio González, Ignacio Pinazo, and Miquel Navarro. I was completely astonished by the works of Julio González - the artist, considered "the father of all iron sculpture of the century", from a long line of metalsmith workers, a close friend of Pablo Picasso. Though his works are present everywhere in the world, from New York to Paris, IVAM holds the biggest collection. The museum also has around 20 temporary exhibitions per year.
