A small shop with beautiful graphics from yesterday and curious artefacts making you very grasping.
A poster's portrait asks me, "Have you seen Spain?" Novedades Casino is a treasure trove of graphic trinkets. I love that each design tells a little story, often about Valencia's or Spain's past. And even more about the collective image of Spain: the land of the sun, holidays, football, and oranges.
Its name needs some explaining. 'Novedades' means 'new things', but the designs are mainly from the past. Re-watching these old images may reveal something new. 'Casino' is the owner's slightly enviable surname, Pablo Casino.
For example, Casino's stunning collection of matchboxes offers a new glimpse into Spain's past. A happy bull on the El Torro Bravo matchbox sparks your curiosity about the campsite it represents. Too bad it doesn't exist anymore. The beautifully illustrated matchboxes of old clubs, with names like Meiga (witch) and le Clochard (the tramp), are so captivating that you almost want to start smoking again. Amazingly, these little works of art were once free, but now it's tempting to buy them all.
The shop sign says, 'Irregular opening hours': take this seriously—if Pablo's in, the shop's open; if not, it's closed. The best chances are between 12:00 and 14:00 and 18:00 and 20:00, but to avoid disappointment, check with the shop via WhatsApp or Instagram first.
Have you ever seen Spain? Yes, in another way, I'd say, by visiting Novedades Casino.
