Walking around or riding by the Main Street Skytrain station, if you keep your eyes open, you can spot this mural of a crumpled-up orange plastic bottle painted onto a blue industrial building on a side street. Â Many people might admire it from afar and not go closer to check it out. However, Â if you walk up to see it closer, you can see a sad sight: a faintly painted polar bear trapped inside a plastic prison.
While I have admired this mural for a long time because of its size and contrasting blue and orange colours, I admired it even more once I learned the message behind it.
This piece was painted by Christian Rebecchi & Pablo Togni known together as Nevercrew. They have created art together for a long time all over the world. Â For this piece, they wanted to speak to the themes of global warming and the destruction and exploitation of the earth because of human's greed and desire for profit.
Unfortunately, it has been graffitied, and has still not been fixed, but I hope to see it restored one day.
It’s located across from the Midas and behind the Kal Tire off of Main Street and Industrial Avenue, and is one of the first of many murals you might encounter on a street art walk in the area.
