Although a pretty modern city, Vancouver still has a good selection of historic architecture if you know where to look. The only house museum in the city is Roedde House, which gives you a look into life in the city and generally at the turn of the century. It was built in 1893 and was the home of the city’s first bookbinder, Gustave Roedde.
For a small museum, it packs a lot of information about the quirks of the era. You can visit with a volunteer-led guided tour or a self-guided tour using their pamphlet. Check out the artefacts in each room and find the interesting and sometimes tragic stories behind them. Special events like afternoon tea and tours, and jazz concerts let you experience the museum in a different way too. Entrance is through the front door, and you might get to ring the old-fashioned doorbell.
They also host some holiday craft fairs, such as a Victorian Christmas Market. Currently, the house is also decorated with period Christmas decorations, making for some extra things to look at on a visit.
My favourite parts of the house are the upstairs bedrooms and the kitchen because they contain lots of fun facts about the Roedde family and plenty of artifacts to look at.
