The choice of the connoisseur: the award-winning Rieppel is a secret spot deep in the heart of the improving 15th district, and has been quietly gaining a reputation as a bakery par excellence for a number of years. In fact, I've even heard stories about the bakery’s vans being followed by determined customers desperate to find where they source their holy bread, and although this is difficult to verify, I wouldn’t be surprised. Rieppel is genuinely one of the best things about Rudolfsheim.
It’s interior belies its outstanding bread – it certainly doesn’t have any of the hipster touches of other gentrified places in the area. Rieppel is an old-fashioned place where people still gather to get the gossip about the goings-on in the Grätzl (community). The service is always good and the staff are really friendly. The adjoining café is also excellent.
The white bread is no great shakes but the black bread is genuinely world-class. The nut bread, or the Vollkorn mit Kürbiskerne (wholewheat with pumpkin seeds) are hard to beat anywhere. Additionally, if you turn up from 17:30, bread and cakes are sold at half price to make sure there's room for fresh stuff the day after. Be sure to get your skates on, guys.
