Hillwood is one of the best art collector’s museums I have been to. The estate, along with the museum and gardens, is dedicated to preserving and sharing the beauty of Marjorie Merriweather Post’s collection and vision.
Hillwood has the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia, an impressive eighteenth-century French decorative art collection, and thirteen acres of formal landscaped gardens that include a Japanese-style garden, rose garden, and greenhouse. It’s an oasis that is inviting any time of the year. Take your time strolling through the gardens, and if you’d like to extend your stay, stop by the cafe.
Inside the museum, you’ll find, among many other things, Fabergé eggs, Sèvres porcelain, and a beautiful collection of jewelry owned by Post.
Hillwood Estate is open and advance registration is required. If you can’t make it in person, I highly recommend exploring the collection online. They have high-quality photos and descriptions of many items. You can also book a virtual tour with a docent (on Zoom).
