Since I am from a flat country (Moldova), the highlight of my time in Skopje is the fact that wherever you turn up, you have a mountain view. Also, I love the fact that 20 minutes later you can escape the Skopje jungle, and emerge in the beautiful fauna of the mountains.
Vodno Mountain is located 20 minutes from the city center by bus, and it takes you to the middle of the mountain. From there you can start hiking or if you have a bicycle then you can be more adventurous and ride it all the way to the top, experiencing a rider’s high by going down full speed. The mountain provides amazing views over the city, and the air is crisp and clean to filter your lungs.
If you are even more adventurous, once reaching the top you can hike all the way to Matka Canyon, another natural landmark that you can’t miss while being in Skopje. Also, there are a lot of monasteries and churches worth discovering. You can take one a week, and you’ll have a half-year hiking schedule.
For those who do not want to hike all the way to the top, but who still want to experience the view, there are cable cars that will take you up.
