If there is a place that I really love just a few kilometers from the center of Athens center that's Peiraiki.
Peiraiki is the coastline of Piraeus that starts from the Chatzikyriakeio area and ends at Mikrolimano. In order to visit the area, just take the green line metro to the last stop (Piraeus) and then bus 904 can take you there. Or just grab a taxi outside Piraeus train station.
If you love discovering a city by walking and if you also love walking next to the sea, Peiraiki is the place to be! The ideal time to visit is before sunset in order to enjoy the orange sky and its reflection on the sea. You can also gaze at the big ships that are waiting to enter the port of Piraeus. In Greek this is called "rada" or "arodou", and my father who used to be sailor for a few years says that it comes from the phrase "on the road". Some beatnik feeling on the coastline...
Peiraiki is also famous for its "ouzeri", the places where you can enjoy a glass of ouzo while tasting octopus, squid and a big salad with feta cheese and tomatoes. The one I like the best is called Ormos Afroditi, a traditional ouzeri where they serve huge amounts of food.
Take your time and walk next to the sea...
