Ährensache Biobäckerei is a bakery that sells baked goods made from organic and regional raw materials. They also have allergy-free goods (i.e. wheat-free, yeast-free, animal-protein-free, and gluten-free). My favorite breads from Ährensache Biobäckerei are the Überraschungsbrot (literally the “surprise bread”) and the vegan Dinkel-Kamut Hefebrot Mohn (i.e. Spelt-Camut Yeast Bread with Poppy Seeds). Besides bread, they also sell other baked goods, including permanent and seasonal pastries. For instance, during the Cologne Carnival (on November 11 and in February / early March), they, of course, have Berliner on offer.
In addition to selling delicious baked goods, they are also determined to create humane working conditions for their employees and themselves, which shows: the staff is always friendly. They also offer guided tours for kindergarten groups or school classes.
If the Ährensache Biobäckerei is too far from you, you will also find their products at the online farmers’ market Marktschwärmer (i.e. The Food Assembly), which delivers local products to several locations in Cologne.
