There are so many stereotypes about the Russian people’s addiction to vodka and so little truthful information about the history of this drink. Do you want to know more about the facts and legends that have shaped this part of the Russian culture throughout history? If yes, consider the Russian Vodka Museum while walking around the Senate square in St. Petersburg.
Last time when I was walking down the picturesque Konnogvardeysky Boulevard, I stopped stop near house number 4 and look at the entrance to the restaurant Russian Vodka Room No.1. I know this place quite well. Normally, when I enter the spot I always go to the left to the restaurant. This time I went to the right and was surprised that this spot is not only about eating, but also watching and learning. This is the place where gourmet meets culture.
Russian Vodka Museum offers an impressive exhibition that reveals the history of Russian vodka and other beverages and food from the 14th century till nowadays, including the production process, traditions, funny stories... and of course the traditional consumption process! Discover how Peter the First forced his retinue to drink buckets of vodka and how a small glass of this drink could save a life during the Second World War.
I explored the exhibits by myself, but I would recommend all English-speaking visitors take a guided tour.
In the end of the exhibition there is a chance to taste some types of vodka with traditional Russian snacks.
