Birtija is a quite unique and authentic place located at Baščaršija.

The interior is enchanting, cozy and somehow romantic, so completely in contrast to the name Birtija which in Bosnia and Herzegovina bears reference to differently conceptualized places to drink. There are all kinds of ornaments on the walls and sometimes, I just tune out, listen to music and concentrate on finding as many details as possible.

I enjoy spending my nights out here, with a bunch of friends, drinking tasty dark beer or višnjevača (cherry rakia) and I can’t even choose the season that suits this place best. Summer evenings and nights are exceptional, you can sit by the window on the cushions and watch the city center transforming, it’s really like a timelapse video right before your eyes. And during the winter with candles and a warm atmosphere, you’ll hardly want to go some place else.

As for the music, the accent is on chilling and relaxing so you’ll get to listen to jazz and silent blues. Besides the ground floor there is also the first floor, which reminds me of an old Victorian study. The walls are covered with framed portraits of locals, some of them are regular visitors and I find that idea brilliant.

This whole concept of an intimate ambience with a laid back vibe and more than friendly staff is more than enough reason for me to make Birtija my regular spot, and to warmly suggest for you to come and experience it too.
