Plein 1813 is a beautiful square in The Hague near the city centre. On this square is the national monument of independence as a reminder of the independence of the Netherlands in 1813 after the French occupation of Napoleon. It was revealed in 1869 by King Willem III.
The main eyecatcher is the monument. There are different statues on the different sides of the monuments, which are beautifully carved. There are also really nice flowers surrounding the statue. The flowers change depending on the season, so in spring, there are tulips and so on.
Around the square, there are monumental chestnut trees that provide shade in the summer, and nice colors in the fall, but they are an amazing site all year round. Additionally, there are villas surrounding the square, which nowadays house embassies and companies, as well as the Sophiahof Museum, a museum about the colonial past of the Netherlands in Indonesia.
This square is worth a visit, for example, during your walk to the Peace Palace, which is just a block away.
