The Benlliure House Museum is the old family house donated to the city by the Benlliure family, an important saga of Valencian artists from the late 19th century and early 20th century. The building, which is located next to the San José Bridge in the old river bed, has 3 floors and is a clear example of a typical house of the Valencian bourgeoisie of that time. On the ground floor, different rooms of the family home are recreated, such as the bedroom or the library.
One of my favourite parts, because of the peace it conveys, is the beautiful garden in the back that has orange and palm trees as well as a fountain and ceramic decoration on the side walls. At the end of the garden is the studio of the painter José Benlliure, which is faithfully preserved with all the objects used in the creation process, as well as other decorative objects. José Benlliure was an outstanding painter who lived for many years in Italy and who, after his international recognition, returned to his native Valencia.
The first floor is dedicated to his works, which show scenes from his trips to North Africa, Valencian traditional customs scenes or portraits of friends and family. The second floor has paintings by José Benlliure's son, Peppino Benlliure and sculptures by José's brother, Mariano Benlliure.
This place is an essential visit to get to know this saga of Valencian artists first-hand. Please note that admission is free on Sundays and bank holidays.
