After 5 years of restoration and remodelling of the old Valeriola Palace, the Hortensia Herrero Art Center is the latest artistic offering to join the city. It is the private collection of local patron Hortensia Herrero, who, through her foundation, has been in charge of the entire rehabilitation project of this palace, which was disused and in a state of abandonment for many years.
The collection includes more than 100 pictorial and sculptural works by more than 50 internationally renowned contemporary artists: Andreas Gursky, George Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer, among others. The Valeriola Palace is located in the historic centre and dates back to the 17th century, although it contains Roman, Visigoth, Islamic, Jewish and Christian vestiges that have been preserved to show the public part of the city's history. It is made up of two four-story buildings that contain a total of 17 rooms. For specific locations, site-specific works have been used, such as the covering of the access door to the exterior garden, made by the Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. Touring its rooms is a sensory journey that does not leave the visitor indifferent. It is recommended to follow the proposed route through the art center, where you will always find qualified personnel who will assist you if you have any questions.
