Looking for a taste of Asia without having to travel abroad? It’s a situation I often find myself in. One of my favourite solutions to this problem is Laksa King, a no-frills place located in a more residential area of the city.
The star dish is, of course, Laksa, a type of Malaysian soup. It’s a spicy broth infused with coconut or curry flavours, proteins, fresh herbs, noodles made of egg, rice, or a mixture of both, and my favourite, squishy tofu puffs that soak up all the flavour. Aside from Laksa, my favourite is their beef rendang which is stewed beef in a coconut gravy. The sweet and spicy Mee Goreng chicken, Hainese Chicken, and green papaya salad are also fan favourites.
In a world of consistently rising prices, you don’t have to worry, as the Laksa will set you back $17.50 a plate, but the portions are big enough to share or leave with leftovers. If you have dietary restrictions or can’t handle spice, they have you covered with modifications available.
The restaurant's decor has always made Laksa King stand out for me. The colourful interior features red booths and retro pictures, preserving the 1950s ambience of the location's original function as a diner. I find this old-school style helps keep the hipster hordes away and lets me have a peaceful lunch. With a cosy atmosphere and quick service, both groups and solo diners will feel right at home here.
