Looking for a delightful, off the beaten path, educational and fun experience? Then take the scenic route on Marine Drive and make your way to Southlands Heritage Farm. Also accessible by bus (take bus 49), this farm within the city has made it their mission to guide us all into making healthier, more sustainable choices.
The farm has several programs, most of them aimed at kids and teens, but visitors of all ages are welcome. Take a stroll through their gardens, hand feed their chickens and goats (please ask for their permission first), walk through the barn to greet the ponies and horses and stop by their farmer's market on the way out for some fresh produce, eggs, honey and jams. It's a great way to spend a sunny couple of hours while learning more about sustainable farming initiatives.
Entrance is by donation, but I'm sure you'll have no problem showing your appreciation for all the awareness they strive to generate. Besides farm camps and riding classes, their facilities are available for rental for special events such as birthday parties and weddings.
Check their website for upcoming events and programs. There's always something interesting going on.
