In the heart of downtown lies The Vancouver Public Library Rooftop Garden, a free rooftop viewpoint and patio. This is a fairly new public space, opened in 2018 (after over twenty years of delay) and remains somewhat of a hidden gem.
It is open to everyone, regardless of whether you are a library patron or not. Simply enter and head to the elevators, then press the button to go to the top floor (level nine).
This outdoor space has three sections. The two patios on level eight and the rooftop Phillips, Hager and North Garden at level nine have plenty of tables, chairs, and benches you can use to work, read, relax, or study at. The views are the highlight, giving you an unique panoramic look at downtown.
It has a calm yet family friendly atmosphere, where children run around next to university students searching for study motivation in a different atmosphere. Of course you will see people taking photos, but in general people use it as an extension of the library for reading, studying, and even doing puzzles. You can also bring up some snacks or a picnic, as this is the only part of the library food is allowed.
During the colder months it’s nice for a view of the fall foliage and a quick stroll around the different viewpoints.
