Why the Viennese love summer: All over the city, cultural stages pop up. The city government supports them, so we enjoy tons of activities for free. Lucky us, aaaand lucky you!
Where you can find the fun:
Be part of Europe's largest free open-air music festival, Donauinselfest [June 20-22].
There's MQ Summer Stage with various acts [until the end of September].
Offering a broad-ranging program in most districts, the Viennese Cultural Summer, with many small stages, invites you to enjoy concerts, dance shows, plays, readings, and comedy. Find the full program here. All spots are accessible, and your dogs are welcome, too - with a lead and muzzle [June 26 - August 10]. Basiskultur also comes up with cool ideas.
An area with the flair of a cosy lounge awaits you at the Film Festival at Rathausplatz - find the complete list here [June 28 - August 1]. They show concerts on a 300-square-meter screen, so I also included it in my article on open-air cinemas. After the KARLSkino outdoor movie festival withdraws from the square, it makes space for the Popfest, which will bring cool music to the city [July 24-27].
Also, Platzkonzerte at the alternative (music) courtyard of WUK are back [August 12 - 29].
Possibly the weirdest location to enjoy a music performance is the central cemetery: Nachklang [August 29] – come at five to secure your seat!
Then there is gürtel nightwalk (August 30) with many clubs and bars involved, and the two-day festival at the largest park, called Prater: Volksstimmefest [August 30 - 31].
