On Zagreb’s hill Šalata there are several faculties and departments that are members of the University of Zagreb: The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics), The Faculty of Medicine, as well as the Pharmaceutical botanical garden of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medical Biochemistry. Unofficially, this area is called the Northern Campus, although there are official plans for reconstruction and further development by the University.
All the buildings are within walking distance from each other, located in a peaceful, green neighbourhood. There are a lot of benches, parks, pathways and even bicycle tracks. Buildings are modern, some of them hosting a student cantina, cafes or visitor’s rooms. The botanical garden is also open for everyone, free of charge.
I like this part of Zagreb because it hosts some of the most modern educational and scientific institutions, their modern campus look being a pride of the old University. It is also a great spot to have a peaceful walk, or an educational stroll through the botanical garden or by the meteorological station, completely for free, and just 3 bus stops from the very heart of the city!
