Simple and fresh fried fish like smelts (gavuni), sprats (papline) or sardines used to be the most common food in poor parts of Dalmatia and the Mediterranean. Today, the old simple dishes are becoming more popular then ever because they are healthy, nutritious and usually easy to make. Triton fish fast food is one of those places that best represent simple and delicious foods.
Located on Kvartić farmers market, appropriately right next to the fresh fish market, Triton is a little street food gem. Besides fish, I often order fried calamari, since it's one of my favorite fried foods ever. Every day they use fresh oil for frying and you can taste nothing but fish (or calamari) in their food. For the side dish you can choose between potato salad & French fries. I recommend the potato salad because it's not only the healthier option but it's fresh-made and goes perfectly with the fish.
This is a simple street food stand with three small tables & only a few chairs. You take your order to-go and sit on a bench in a nearby park and have a small picnic. Feel free to eat with your hands, no one will look at you funny. We all do it. Small fried fish is meant to be enjoyed like that, and this is the kind of fish Croatians eat the most. The smell of fried sardines does often takes my mind to the Adriatic & summer vibes. If you've visited Dalmatia, you'll know what I mean.
