When I saw the name Flax & Kale, it seemed the hype of eating kale arrived in my city. Not keen on this hipster hype (kale is a very old-fashioned dish in Holland) I wasn't excited right away. Until I looked through the window... I have a soft spot for great design and the interior here looks absolutely amazing. Bright and fresh for daytime brunch, cosy and warm for a dinner with friends. It is a big space, industrial yet colourful, and in the back you look straight into the kitchen with heaps of vegetables piled up, giving it a 'straight from the market' look.
Flax & Kale is a 'flexitarian' restaurant, which means their menu is mainly vegetarian but they also serve fish. And yes, they do have kale chips as a starter and the menu may sound a bit fancy at first (avocado cheesecake, who'd have thought of that?) but to be honest the food is amazing. The veggie burger was delicious and there were so many good looking dishes served around me, I went back two weeks later to try something else. Curry, tacos, tuna, pasta, it all looks great and it is all prepared in a creative and healthy way. I only went there for dinner, but rumour has it their brunch is worth a try too.
It can be busy on the weekends, so it might be smart to make a reservation. They only take online reservations, so check their website for availability!
