In USSR all the pupils from 9 to 14 years were members of the Pioneers Organization. This was part of Soviet propaganda, but there were a lot of good things about it. For example, all the pioneers could spend their holidays in special resorts for children somewhere by the sea or in the mountains just for free. Or they could have free lessons of music, singing, dancing, crafts etc. in such place as Pioneer Palace. Lots of concerts, meetings with famous people, interesting lectures took place there.
Kyiv's Pioneers Palace is a good example of Soviet Modernism in architecture. Built on the picturesque hills of Dnipro river, it faces the landscape of the left bank and on the right hand side you can see the Park of Eternal Glory and Kyiv's Lavra domes. It's still operating, you can come inside and enjoy the interior. The children still come here for concerts, festivals and lessons, but the cruel capitalistic world now makes their parents to pay for it. When my son will grow older I'll definitely take him there for some extracurricular activities!
PS: on the picture you can see the chief architect of the Palace - Edward Bilsky.
