Have you ever heard about "Kafana", a traditional Macedonian restaurant...?!? It's a venue similar to Taverns in Greece, Trattorias in Italy or Tapas restaurants in Spain, except its concept is much different than these examples. For us, the Bohemian souls that live here, it's a sacred place. It's where we usually end up Friday or Saturday night, after the long awaited end of the work week, and treat ourselves with delicious specialties from the domestic cuisine. It usually starts with salads and hors d'oeuvres, followed by meat dishes and accompanied by lots of Rakija, wine or beer while enjoying the sounds of live music ensembles. You probably won't recognize the music, but nonetheless you can enjoy the joyful atmosphere that's been created instantly.
This place is called "Gostilnica Jole", it's located downtown and has been the meeting point for this city's Bohemian scene since 1965. With a lovely garden in the back, it's most vibrant nights are Friday and Saturday, when musicians take over the venue. You'll definitely need a reservation, and bring some cash because it's a custom to give tips to the band. Don't be afraid if someone from the nearby tables joins you, starts talking or even orders a song for you. It's all in good spirit, and most people here are very friendly and open to meeting newcomers, especially after a couple of glasses of wine.
