Next to Haulitorni, on the other side of the railway, there is Santalahti. Santalahti is a very small suburb and it is one of the suburbs in Tampere that have recently got a brand new life.
Traditionally, Santalahti has hosted giant old red brick industrial buildings and some villas built for the directors of those factories. Although many new blocks of flats have been recently built and many more will be built in the area in the near future, there are a few gorgeous villas left.
Personally, I think that the best part of Santalahti suburb will be the great old red-brick factories getting a new life in the next few years. What else the future will bring remains to be seen but there are some very nice light installations in the area already.
The best way to explore the area is to admire first Haulitorni and then go under the railway to Santalahti area. From Santalahti there is an overpass to Santalahden tapahtumapuisto, a large, brand new park by the beach of Näsijärvi. In the park you can find a nice recreational area with outdoor grills. Continue walking for a few minutes and there is the most beautiful place to swim in the whole city, the amazing sand lagoon, Elianderin ranta.
Santalahden tapahtumapuisto will be accessible by tram (by 2023). It is where the giant outdoor music festivals held in the city will be organised.
