The old Russafa Boxing Club is now an art gallery featuring studios and a stage for performances. Visiting it gives you a rare behind-the-scenes look at the art.
You wouldn't expect what is behind this ordinary shop window in Valencia's Ruzafa (Russafa in Valencian). When you enter, there is a narrow art gallery, but the real surprise comes at the end: a massive space featuring a stage and open studios.
The space resembles a factory hall but used to be a boxing club, with its original sign hanging from the roof. The boxing arena began in 1930 when Ruzafa was a struggling barrio with poor residents. It closed in 1980 but reopened in 2003 as an art space.
What I love about this place is that it's not just about the art on the wall. It's a welcoming and open space, which makes it stand out. You'll see the artists in action in their studios, and if they have time, it's great to chat with them. Josie and Tina are often present and are very friendly. The opening hours are flexible, but you can usually drop in when the artists are at work.
Sporting Club hosts monthly exhibitions and great dance and music performances. Check its social media for details.
The artists: Josie McCoy, Jose Antonio Picazo, Ximo Micó, Lucía Peiró Lloret, María José Ballester, Elena Martí Manzanares, Maite Backman, Tina McCallan (aka Marie Julou), Fernándo Rincón, Rafa de Corral.

One of my fondest memories of the city during summer is sitting by their giant-red-plastic cone and cooling down while having a delicious treat.
