Vegan Maran is Vienna’s first vegan supermarket. It opened back in 2013.
The two owners, Mrs. and Mr. Maran, a married couple, have been in the groceries business for quite some time. A few decades ago they established the first organic supermarket chain in the city.
After taking a break and running a small organic farm themselves, they decided to go all vegan and spread their wholesome approach to the world.
Their business idea includes both a supermarket with over 4000 products as well as a small bistro, which serves breakfast, lunch, pastries, freshly pressed juices and coffee. Their daily lunch menu can be checked on their facebook page. Vegan Maran not only places great value on regionality, fair trade production and organic products, they also operate on the basis of a holistic philosophy. They strongly encourage the idea of an economy of public welfare by cooperating with food saving associations and by supporting refugee or school projects.
In 2016 they published their own thirty-six-page economy of public welfare report, going 100% transparent about their revenue and profit and evaluating themselves based on many factors, like business equality, ethical management of finances, contribution to public welfare, internal democracy and transparency, reduction of ecological impact and much more.
For me, this is the way to take steps into the future. Props to you, Maran Vegan!
