Traumathek is a film rental shop that I first read about in Hidden Cologne, an English-language city guide published by Stadtrevue. The first time I went to the Traumathek, I was actually debating whether to have a drink before dinner or continue exploring Cologne. After deciding to have a quick look around the nearby Traumathek, I was delighted to discover that it was indeed the perfect place for a pre-dinner drink: as well as being a film rental shop, the Traumathek also has a film café serving hot and cold drinks.
Founded in 1994, Traumathek not only rents films but also sells vinyl soundtracks, film books and film posters. There is also a cinema called Studio Argento, named after director Dario Argento, where evening screenings, readings and panels take place. To get an idea of the kind of films they show, on my last visit they were showing Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg and Varda par Agnès by Agnès Varda. Studio Argento can also be hired for private events.
"Dank Augusta" is a kiosk in the botanical garden of Cologne where I love to go for a coffee or a bite to eat. This is the perfect spot for a picnic!

"Miss Päpki" in Cologne is definitely a stereotype cafe. It reminds me very strongly of an old royal English tea house, but it's made with lots of passion.
