Forget traditional ways of exploring a new city! Instead, buy an orienteering map and start discovering the places no tourist has seen before... It's a fun and eye-opening experience with some challenge.
Every Monday afternoon/early evening there is a large meeting of people around the city and from the neighbourhoods as well. This meeting called Iltarastit takes place in woods in different parts of the city - literally!
This group of people comes from various backgrounds; they are old and young, first-timers as well as semi-professionals. They all have the same purpose; enjoy the nature with a map full of checkpoints in their hands. They have several routes to choose from - the shortest is 3 kilometres and the longest around 10. Every route has a different grading, from that more suitable for total beginners to those geared for professionals.
Sounds tempting? The best way to start is to head to Suunnistajan kauppa (Orienteering store) in Rantaperkiö to buy a map. There you can get also a great piece of advice if you are a first-timer. Then, with a map in hand, you should orienteer to the starting point of the route to begin your memorable adventure. The second option is to go straight to the starting point on a Monday afternoon and buy your map there.
I strongly recommend going on this adventure!
