Kellariravintola Vanha Monttu is an old-fashioned, typically 'Tampere' restaurant and pub, hidden in the basement area underneath one block of buildings on Hämeenkatu, which has been there since the 60s. While its atmosphere feels a bit rough and boorish and its space can feel a bit cramped, it has its own unique charm. It's a very popular spot among the Tampere locals and students, not only because of its affordable drinks and food, but also because there are bingo, pub quizzes and karaoke events organized there every week.
From all the times I have been there, I have come to the opinion that Vanha Monttu is one of the most informal pubs in Tampere. But that's actually a good thing! You can just go in there without thinking about how you look, have a drink, have something to eat, and enjoy the evening - or whenever it is you visit. Aside from the usual bar snacks, it even offers a simple breakfast every day until 13:00, for those who feel like popping in during the morning and don't feel like making breakfast at home.
